[Treatment for envy contd.]
Another treatment of envy is to know with certainty that holding envy against another person brings harm to oneself. Envy can infact damage one's sanity. The basis of the remedy for envy is TAQWA of ALLAH.
The causes of envy are arrogance, low self esteem, love of leadership and covetousness. It is important to be aware of the feelings that reside in one's heart. This self awareness is essential for the purpose of purification.
Another cause of envy is vying for another's love or affection, which can become vicious; and its effect can linger in a person for a very long time, which is often the case when siblings compete for parental love. On this topic one may read Frank J. Sulloway's Born to Rebel. [Purification of the Heart].
